Hi! My name is Lindsay Blackburn.
When I was 11 years old, I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. Needless to say, my entire life changed at that point. For the first couple of years, I was really on top of managing it, and making sure I was eating properly. But once I entered my teenage years, some bad personal experiences and my unhealthy relationship with food caused me to not care at all about my diabetes. Quite a few years, a handful of hospital visits, and a near death experience finally made me straighten up and want to really take care of myself.
It wasn’t easy. I had to relook at the way I saw food and exercise, and basically had to completely re-learn how to manage my blood sugar levels. But with a lot of support from my friends, family, and doctors, I’ve gotten back to where I need to be. And I plan on staying here.
After regaining control over a disease that can be completely unpredictable, it has become my passion to educate, encourage, and support others to do the same. That’s why I’ve started this blog. I also want to show the world (as well as other T1Ds) that you can live a fun and fabulous life while maintaining your disease. Being diabetic hasn’t stopped me from chasing after my dreams, hasn’t stopped me from having a normal (or as close to normal as one can get) life, and I can still have fun doing the things a twenty-something should do.
